Presentation "A Realistic and Practical Outlook on IB English Language Education in Japanese High Schools”

The International Baccalaureate program, having reached Japanese shores a few decades ago is finally spreading far and wide with as many as 100 schools adopting the program across the nation (IBO, 2017). The name itself glistens with so much international education glamour that it’s hard to not be drawn to its branding. Private and international schools are the main providers of the program, with more public schools joining in on the fun. This workshop-style seminar will focus on what the IB program looks like in an Article 1 public school setting, and the monumental challenges for Japanese students who may realistically not be ready to undertake this immense course, especially with regard to the language requirements. Using the IB English Language B course as an example, let’s explore what an IB English lesson looks like, what the assessments and criteria of the course are, and whether the IB program is a practical choice for students wanting to enter universities within and out of Japan.

17:25〜18:10 Hideaki FURUKAWA (Kindai University Senior & Junior High School)

Presentation “Transition to Students-Centered〜Our Challenge Aiming at Fostering Communicative Skills in English〜”

I had taught English in the so-called “Japanese traditional” way for a long time, so students described my lessons as like ‘Jigoku (the hell)’. Since then, I have struggled to examine and meet the real needs of students to learn English. Of course, my daily lessons are still not perfect (sometimes 'Jigoku’? not a single lesson is perfect in the world…!). However, I feel them become much more improved than previous ones, in which students were not inspired and motivated. I would like to share my story of the transition and introduce what I have tackled in my classrooms. Some productive tasks such as Vlogs(Video blogs) based on Shape it! series (Cambridge University Press), or IB CAS are presented in the presentation.
