PresentERs － Reading-Writingの授業で多読を導入するには

Abstract:
Last semester, we integrated ER into a Reading–Writing B1 course at the university level in Viet Nam. Initially, we viewed ER mainly as reading for pleasure outside the classroom. However, through implementation, student feedback, and discussions with ER specialists, we began to see ER differently — as a continuum that can connect intensive reading, shared reading, graded readers, classroom interaction, and independent reading development.

In this talk, we will briefly share: how we adapted ER to fit a real university curriculum with limited class time; what surprised us about student engagement and participation; and how our own understanding of reading development changed during the process.

We will also reflect on the challenges of implementing ER in an exam-oriented context and how small, manageable changes can still make a meaningful difference. The session is especially relevant for teachers working in universities or contexts where a fully “pure” ER may not seem realistic.

発表者の紹介：
Tram Nguyen is a university lecturer at the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities – Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (EF, USSH-VNUHCM). With a Master’s in Linguistics with a TESOL concentration, she has been teaching English language skills at EF to English-majored university students as well as adult learners. In the ELT landscape of Vietnam where intensive reading is more common, she is eager to share her experience of implementing ER in her classes to promote student engagement as well as her own.

Lurry Nguyen holds an M.A. in English Linguistics with a concentration in TESOL. He is a lecturer in the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City, where he teaches pronunciation, grammar, presentation skills, business English, teaching methodology, materials development for ELT, English linguistics, and classroom-based assessment. He is also an experienced instructor in high-stakes exam preparation. His research interests include extensive reading, pronunciation intelligibility, international varieties of English, materials development, and language assessment.
