　　“Keys to Being a Successful English Teacher”

There are a lot of drastic educational reforms or changes being in progress in our country, such as unified university entrance examination, the new course of study, active learning in classrooms, etc. The English education is not an exception. In order for prospective or younger English teachers today to cope with these proposed reforms, I would like to discuss some keys to being a successful English teacher, based upon my experience as an English language learner, a high school teacher, teacher’s consultant, and principal. The keys are mainly divided into three categories: levels of English proficiency, fundamental competencies for working person, and desirable teaching skills, knowledge and attitudes. I would like to discuss these categories with the participants through a brief workshop-styled presentation, and make some suggestions.

　　“Creating English tests that can measure students’ abilities, effectively improving their English proficiencies”

In the Japanese English as a foreign language (EFL) situation where there is no practical need to use English in our daily life, most of the students in junior and senior high school are studying English for tests, either regularly scheduled tests (teikikousa) or entrance examinations. Thus, tests have definitely a great impact on what and how to teach and learn English, or we can go so far as to say, tests can dominate teaching and learning. With this in our mind, tests are supposed to be made so that they can assess students’ English abilities accurately as well as improving students’ English proficiencies. However, as Wakabayashi and Negishi (1993) claimed more than two decades ago, English tests in Japanese schools and entrance exams are far from flawless: They are not measuring knowledge, skills, and abilities in English accurately, sometimes giving harmful backwash effect. Since their strong claims (Wakabayashi & Negisi, 1993), we have seen rapid progress in the testing theories and assessment. However, in practice, we have not yet seen a development in regularly scheduled tests in school and some (many?) entrance exams. There is a definite need to improve the quality of tests now.
In creating tests that can measure abilities well, effectively improving students’ English skills, we have to pay great attention to “validity”, ‘reliability”, “practicality” and “backwash effect”. In the WS style presentation, presenters discuss: these basic principles in creating tests; consider how teachers should measure students’ communicative abilities in English: various types of question formats. In addition, presenters and the audience have discussions after analysing some test-items and questions.
