　　 Practical report “How Juku has been involved in teaching English in Japan.”

“Juku” is known in Japan, even in the world, as supplemental education service or the shadow education system. I am somebody who has been working at Juku School for a long time, so I'd like to share, stepping out of the shadows, how we have been involved in teaching English by trial and error for three decades.

　　 Research and practice report “Dilemmas faced in learning to teach English in Japanese Junior High Schools”

A long time ago, I first came to Japan as an ALT and worked at a JHS for two years. Officially, I was in Japan to encourage students to communicate in English but this ideal did not seem to match the reality of my school. During that period, I often wondered, “Why am I here?” “What is the point of English in JHS?” Fifteen years later, I finally decided to look into this topic. I began an 18-month study on three first-year English teachers and examined the dilemmas they experienced trying to conduct communicative language teaching (CLT). For my presentation, I will present these dilemmas and we will discuss their implications together. The greatest lesson learned from this research is rather than there being some kind of overall purpose for English to which all teachers adhere, successful teachers seem to have their own valid rationale for teaching English which they can articulate clearly and enact.

　　 Workshop 1 “English Lessons in English: Small Talk and Gestures”

In English lessons in English, teachers should give students as much high quality of English input as possible that can contribute to students’ language development.
This WS focuses on small talk and gestures that can provide students with comprehensible, i＋1 input, a little bit beyond learners’ current level of English(e.g., Krashen, 1981, 1985).
After discussing crucial features of small talk, a talk given by the teacher with linguistic and conversational adjustments, the audience experience effective small talk.
As for gestures, after various types of gestures and their effects are discussed, we consider how teachers can create effective gestures.

　　 Workshop 2 “Let your students enjoy sounds and rhythm of English!”

“One of the most difficult hurdles for Japanese learners of English to clear is to get over the big gap in sound between Japanese and English. I’ sure many English teachers have hard time teaching English sounds and rhythm.
I’m going to show some fun activities to make pronunciation instructions interesting to learners, focusing on 3 levels in sound and rhythm instructions and sound changes.”
