Workshop “Improving SHS Students’ Willingness to Communicate through Practice-based Activities”
Motivation has influences in English learning, and teachers and researchers have discussed how to improve students’ motivation. Some teachers may encourage communicative tasks (e.g., debate, discussion), and they may claim that students will be motivated through the tasks. This may be partly true. However, in the Japanese EFL context, where students do not have natural exposure of English outside the classroom and their overall English proficiency is not high, I wonder if students will be motivated as such. To make the most use of communicative tasks, I believe that students should be provided more opportunities to practice their English before the tasks. They will feel more motivated by attaining each of the activities through step-by-step lesson plans (e.g., PPP approach). In the workshop, I would like to discuss how to motivate students to learn English, referring to my practices in a junior and senior high school.
14:40~15:30 Kanami JUNO (Kishiwada Senior High School)
Research presentation “The English Lessons that Focus on the Real World in Public High School: Story Retelling to Jigsaw”
This workshop focuses on the following 2 points about English Lessons in public high school. The first is to give the students many opportunities to use English in the real situation, using Jigsaw Activity. In some English lessons, students can use English; however, the use of English may be often meaningless. Therefore, it is so important for us to give necessities to use English. Jigsaw Teaching can lay out such a situation, where the students have to use English in order to achieve some goals. The Second is to enhance their powers of expression, effectively using English textbooks: Story Retelling. The activity can change Receptive Vocabulary, the words students can read and listen to, into Expressive Vocabulary, the words students can speak and write. However, it takes some steps for the students to retell a story well. The presenter will talk mainly about these points through his practices of English lessons.
15:40~16:55 Rintaro SATO (Nara University of Education)
Workshop “Thinking about grammar teaching/learning”
How would you answer these questions?
Can you answer these questions?
1. Do we really need to teach (or learn) grammar?
2. And why, or why not?
3. What kind of grammar teaching (or learning) do you think of?
In the workshop style presentation, we are going to think about the importance (or unimportance) of grammar teaching (learning), followed by the introduction of grammar teaching approaches compatible with the process of second language acquisition(SLA), and then grammar teaching (learning) suitable to the Japanese English as a foreign language (EFL) environment. We are going to look at these approaches critically by actually experiencing them. I welcome your active participation!
17:00 Closing
*Each presentation has Q&A or discussion time. Let’s share your impressions or opinions freely!
We are going to have a friendly party around Kintetsu Nara Station from 17:40.
