奈良教育大学英語教育研究会 2017年5月の会

We would like to hold a study meeting for English education at Nara University of Education (NUE)! Please join us if you are involved with English education or have an interest in it.

Date and time: May 27th, 2017, 14:30~
Location: Nara University of Education Room 201 The room might be changed depending on the situation.
Program:

① 14:40~15:20 Rintaro SATO (Nara University of Education)
  “Nonverbal behaviors in English classes”

In English as a foreign language (EFL) and second language (L2) classrooms, it is commonly believed that comprehensible input is essential for learning. In providing comprehensible input to students verbally, EFL teachers may try to vary the degree of difficulty of the English they use, simplifying or elaborating it depending on student needs (e.g., Ellis, 1994; Larsen-Freeman & Long, 1991; Prabhu, 1987). In addition, in EFL and L2 classrooms, nonverbal behaviors (NVBs), such as gestures, are frequently used as a teaching strategy by teachers to make verbal input more comprehensible (e.g., Allen, 2000: Lazaraton, 2004; Kamiya, 2012; Sueyoshi & Hardison, 2005).
In this WS style presentation, I will introduce how effectively junior and senior high school teachers used NVBs. Audience also will be engaged in some activities using gestures.

 ② 15:30~16:00 Satoshi BAMBA(Kashihara High School)
  “Communicative Activities for English Communication”

In Nara Prefectural, Kashihara High School, a class of first grade English Communication I, I work on the communication based on the subject of each final lesson. In this time, I look back on "Letter-Presentation" that I carried out for the third semester and speak it as a practice announcement.
Although there is not so many situations to read their letters aloud, there are many scenes to read letters aloud by the important ceremony such as a wedding ceremony and the graduation ceremony. I assumed various scenes and carried out this activity with the goal of wearing power to tell their thought, to constitute sentences logically and to sympathize.
I gave a subject "Who do you want to invite to the graduation ceremony?" This timely subject is easy to write and understand for students and they made favorite sentences. Students selected various people, their favorite speakers, actors or singers. In addition, I gave them connection with the contents of the paragraph reading and writing in the class of English Expression I which we performed in parallel, the paragraph writing.
In this class, I aimed at the class to stretch out the communication of the students by exchanging and checking letters in pairs, making presentation in groups, and mutual evaluations.

 ③ 16:10~17:00 Michi YONEZAKI(Konan Women's University)
“The Value of Fostering Student-Generated Questions in English Class”

Q&A activities are one of the traditional teaching activities to measure students’ comprehension of reading text. In typical Q&A activities in the current classroom environment in Japan, students answer the questions from teachers or in textbooks. Unfortunately rarely do students ask questions and the number of students’ questions is limited although asking questions and the consequent search for answers lead to active learning. Why don’t teachers give more opportunities for students to generate their own questions and answers by themselves or with peers in reading? Q&A activities are more interesting and challenging and can foster students’ cognitive and affective engagement if teachers change the current style of Q&A activities (teacher-to-student Q&A) into student-to-student Q&A activities. In order to conduct student-to-student Q&A activities, the presenter will highlight student-generated questions instruction and gives a brief workshop on student-generated questions.

*Each presentation has Q&A or discussion time. Let’s share your impressions or opinions freely!
We are going to have a drinking party around JR Nara Station after the meeting.
