演題：The great anticlockwise shift: British vowels since RP

講師：Geoff Lindsey博士（英国ロンドン大学夏季英語音声学講座ディレクター、PEPSJ顧問）

概要：Most resources on British phonetics still use the vowel symbols that were chosen over half a century ago by A. C. Gimson to give an
‘explicit’ representation of RP, the upper class speech at that time. If these are interpreted literally, the result is an accent which many British people now find comical. The standard Southern British speech of today is a more middle-class accent, and its vowels are substan-tially different. Some vowels are lower, some more back, some are raised, and some are more central.
Together, these changes add up to a large-scale anticlockwise shift in the vowel system. In addition, the traditional symbols divide the vowel system into false subcategories of 'monophthongs' and 'diphthongs', which subsequent changes have made even less appropriate. Those who by necessity use the familiar symbols should do so with caution and in awareness of their inaccuracies.
