Program:
13:30 Opening

13:40~14:40 Kazuya OKUHIRA (Kunneppu Junior High school)
Workshop 1 “Use it or lose it: Developing fluency through fun repeated activity”

Understanding something is one thing; making use of it is another. It takes time for English learners to integrate comprehended input into their interlanguage before they use it in their output. In an ESL environment, learners have various occasions to practice learned items in their daily life. On the other hand, in an EFL environment, learners rarely have chances to use English outside the classroom. However, many English teachers in Japan tend to rush the students into using learned items soon after they are introduced. This presentation will show you examples of fun activities to help students to practice with learned items and to use them more quickly. You can use these fluency-developing activities repeatedly in class. Theoretical background of these activities will also be discussed.

14:50〜16:00 Yuichi SUZUKI (Kanagawa University)
Research presentation “Principles of Repeated Practice: Insights into and from the Yokohama 5-Round System and the TANABU Model”

Engaging in deliberate and systematic practice repeatedly is essential for improving English skills. In this talk, I will offer principles of repeated practice based on research in second language acquisition (e.g., deliberate practice, meaningful practice, and desirable difficulty). These principles are important to make practice effective for acquiring L2 skills; however, implementing them in English curricula in Japanese school settings is easier said than done. Yet, we have witnessed the emergence of recent innovative English curriculums (Yokohama 5-Round System and TANABU Model), which realize the principles I offer. I will analyze key aspects of these curricula based on the principles and discuss implications for maximizing the effectiveness of practice in English learning.

16:10~17:10 Kiwamu KASAHARA (Hokkaido University of Education)
Workshop 2 “Speaking Practice and Activities for Fluency Development”

The aim of this workshop is to have the participants experience some speaking practice and activities for fluency development in English. To know something is one thing; to make use of it is another. It takes time for your students to start to use the items they learned. Don’t rush them into output activities without sufficient practice! You know the fact that babies need a year before they produce one word in their L1. In the first year after their birth, they do a lot of speaking practice like cooing and gurgling unconsciously. L2 learners go through this process consciously. I am going to show you some good practice and activities to develop their English fluency such as tongue twisters, paraphrasing, and an English song.
