Date and time: February 17th, 2018, 14:00〜
Location: Nara University of Education Room 201 The room might be changed depending on the situation.
Program:
① 14:05~14:30 Takeaki IKEGAMI (Nara University of Education)
Graduation paper presentation “Effective Use of Gestures in English Class in EFL Environment”
New course of study for junior high school is going to require English teachers to conduct English lessons mainly in English. Use of gestures in English lessons seems to be a significant factor for following the policy. In order to find a hint for effective use of gesturers in English lessons in Japan, I analyzed two English lessons conducted mainly in English. As a result, both teachers used several kind of gestures such as deictic gestures, which points concrete things with fingers, and beats, which takes rhythm with hand movements, and the gestures seemed to help students to understand what teachers said. In addition, frequency and the way to use gestures in class seemed to be affected by teachers’ character, so teachers might be better to prepare gestures beforehand.
② 14:30~15:00 Yuki HIGASHIKAWA (Graduate School of Nara University of Education)
Master paper presentation “Exploring the effectiveness of small talk in senior high school”
In my presentation, I aim to show effectiveness of small talk, easy English conversation for about five minutes at the beginning of English lessons. I conducted my study in English reading class in a university. Students in Group A experienced small talk five times and students in Group B engaged in reading activity five times. After each activity, they filled in uptake sheet. In my presentation, ‘uptake’ means what learners thought they have learned during English lessons. Nabei (2013) and Ohashi (2015) used uptake sheet in order to reveal the relationship between students’ uptake and teacher talk. Moreover, they filled in Willingness to Communicate (WTC) questionnaire twice: before the five activities and after the five activities.
③ 15:10~15:50 Tadashi IZUMITANI (Kindai University Junior High School)
Practical report “My lessons to improve students' Willingness To Communicate in junior high school”
This presentation addresses an issue of students’ motivation in junior high school. English language teachers will be supposed to conduct lessons in English in junior high schools as well as in senior high schools. This national policy aims at providing students with opportunities to use their English and fostering students’ communication skills. However, are students highly motivated to speak English in the classroom? English language teachers need to consider how to motivate students through conducting lessons in English. The presenter talks about his practices to improve his students’ Willingness To Communicate, one’s volition to speak English.
④ 16:00~16:50 Thomas AMUNDRUD (Nara University of Education)
Workshop “How to increase teacher L2 talk time with effective nonverbal communication”
In this workshop for current and future English teachers, you will practice some basic methods for increasing your L2 teacher talk time and thus decreasing reliance on L1 alone for explanations through the effective use of classroom space and gesture. You will learn how to make your use of classroom space match your activities so that you can use class time efficiently. You will also learn about how you can use gesture to match different kinds of meanings that you and your students encounter in your classes and your textbooks. You will then learn how to apply these meanings to different stages of the lesson and to different kinds of activities for different skills. This will be a low-tech workshop, and teachers will only need their bodies, their class materials, and their imaginations to use the skills learned here in their own classrooms.
*Each presentation has Q&A or discussion time. Let’s share your impressions or opinions freely!
We are going to have a friendly party around Kintetsu Nara Station after the meeting.
